The Saturday 3pm Football TV Blackout Explained: Rules, Exemptions & International Broadcasts

Every Saturday afternoon at 15:00 GMT/BST, fans searching for live football on TV today encounter the United Kingdom's famous 3pm TV blackout. Originating in the 1960s and codified under Article 48 of the UEFA Statutes, this regulation prohibits any live television broadcast of football matches within England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland between 14:45 and 17:15 on Saturdays.

1. How Article 48 Protects Lower-League Stadium Attendance

The Football Association (The FA), Premier League, and English Football League (EFL) jointly maintain the blackout window to protect matchday gate receipts across the English football pyramid—from the Championship down to National League and grassroots non-league clubs. Even if a Saturday 12:30 kick-off runs into injury time past 14:45, special dispensation is required to complete the broadcast.

2. International English-Language Broadcasts of 3pm Matches

Crucially, the Saturday 3pm blackout applies only inside the United Kingdom. Across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Asia, every single Saturday 15:00 Premier League match is filmed with full multi-camera HD production and world-feed English commentary:

• beIN SPORTS 1 English & beIN SPORTS 2 English: Carries live 1080p HD English-commentary broadcasts of top Saturday 15:00 Premier League games.
• Optus Sport / Peacock / SuperSport Premier League: Distributes the official Premier League Productions (PLP) English feed globally.
• Instant Live Match Centres: On FootballOnTV.online, every Saturday 15:00 fixture includes real-time scores, confirmed starting lineups, live match statistics, and direct links to international English broadcast feeds.
